Snoring has a disturbing influence on spouse / bed partner listening to the Snoring. They will have has trouble sleeping deeply. With the different attributes on the “snore sound” loudness, frequency and tone, they are very annoying to the listeners. Studies show that bed partner of snores can generally lose an average of an hour sleep every night and can be waken up as many as 21 times in an hour. Their healthy sleep pattern is being affect and being awaken by the ‘snore sound’ all night through.
It is always being overlooked that the snorers ‘snore sound’ can affect the health of their spouse / bed partner such as Sleep deprivation, Drowsy Driver syndrome and Spousal Arousal Syndrome.
Spousal Arousal Syndrome
Being awakened by your partner's Snoring is called Spousal Arousal Syndrome. Due to the spouse / bed partners can be waken up as many as 21 times in an hour every night, they cannot have good sleep throughout a long period of time. It affected them both physically and mentally. Their work performance is negatively affected by the resulting of fatigue (not enough sleep).
Sleep deprivation
Sleep Apnea is a breathing problem that mainly cause Snoring. As a result, not only people with Sleep Apnea can have sleep deprivation, their bed partner will also suffer sleep deprivation when their sleeping quality is affect by a people having Sleep Apnea sleeping next to them. They will feel excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, lack of productivity and falling asleep in driving (called drowsy driver syndrome).
Effects of Sleep deprivation (can be both physically and mentally)
→ Excessive daytime sleepiness (such as fallen asleep in inappropriate times).
MILD Excessive daytime sleepiness - OSA may fall asleep in a non-stimulating environment (such as reading book in a quiet room)
SEVERE Excessive daytime sleepiness or may fall asleep in a stimulating environment (such as in meeting during work)
→ Falling asleep during work time or watching TV
→ Falling asleep during driving (called drowsy driver syndrome) because of sleep deprivation
→ Frequent cessation of breathing during sleep time
→ Morning wake up feeling unfreshed and exhausted even after asleep all night
→ Behavior and personality changes
→ Trouble in concentration
→ Poor memory and poor judgment
→ Loss of energy
→ Depression and anxiety
→ Weigh gain
What to do About a Spouse with Snore
Snoring can be a bigger problem than you would image. Have you find snoring starting to affect your daily life and your relationship? It’s time to find out the solution. There are many effective methods for stopping and reducing the Snoring.
If your spouse’s Snoring is giving you troubles, it’s time to take action.
→ Talk with your spouse. Communication is always the best method to get problem solved. Find a suitable time to talk to your spouse about the Snoring problem and the effect on you such as Sleep deprivation and spousal arousal syndrome. Let him know about the effects that Spousal Arousal Syndrome can cause.
→ Find out the reasons that cause Snoring. Many common reasons for Snoring include overweight, consumption of alcohol and smoking before bed and sleeping on one’s back. Let’s your spouse know how much you care about him and let him know it might be a health warning that cause his Snoring such as overweight, nasal congestion and nasal blockages.
→ Get advices from doctor or health care professional if not able to find out the reason behind your spouse Snoring. An anatomic abnormalities (such as enlarged tongue or receding chin have higher chance of obstructing the airway) or allergies may need to be diagnosed. In additional Sleep Apnea could be the cause, if left Sleep Apnea untreated, it can be life-threatening It can also have significant consequences such as motor vehicles crashes, high blood pressure, other cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction (impotence), poor memory, short temper, headaches sore throat or dry mouth in the morning.
For the Snorer:
It’s time you show care to your spouse / bed partner, you should understand that no one requested this disorder to come into your lives. Try to work things out together and enjoy the most precious things between you and your spouse like sweet memories, time spent, even tough time going through together.
For the Spouse with Snore:
Let’s your spouse know how much you care about him and let him know it might be a health warning that cause his Snoring. By giving each other courage and support, you two can plan for your future to accommodate the snoring.
