Symptoms and Warning Signs of Sleep Apnea (can be both physically and mentally):

→ Excessive daytime sleepiness (such as fallen asleep in inappropriate times).
MILD Excessive daytime sleepiness - OSA may fall asleep in a non-stimulating environment (such as reading book in a quiet room)
SEVERE Excessive daytime sleepiness or may fall asleep in a stimulating environment (such as in meeting during work)
→ Falling asleep during work time or watching TV
→ Falling asleep during driving (called drowsy driver syndrome) because of sleep deprivation
→ Frequent cessation of breathing during sleep time
→ Non restorative sleep
→ Choking or gasping during sleep time in order get oxygen
→ Awakening during the night to restart breathing
→ Loud snoring
→ Morning wake up feeling unfreshed and exhausted even after asleep all night
→ Behavior and personality changes
→ Trouble in concentration
→ Poor memory and poor judgment
→ Loss of energy
→ Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
→ Depression. Studies show about 1 in 5 people with depression has Sleep Apnea, and people with Sleep Apnea are of 5 times higher to have depression.
→ Weigh gain
→ Hyperactive for children



Risk factors of Sleep Apnea :
→ Overweight or Obesity –The accumulation of fat in the upper sides airway can result in a narrower airway and easily to close when the muscles relax.
→ Alcohol or sedative use before sleep – Cause both the throat muscles and tongue to relax more and simply obstructed the airway.
→ Smoking - Cause inflammation, swelling and thus a narrower airway
Snoring – Cause the soft palate in the back of the throat to length and increase the chance of collapse and obstruct the airway during the sleep.
→ Large tonsil – Higher chance of obstructing the airway
→ Nasal congestion and nasal blockages
→ Elderly - Loss of muscle mass and replaced by fat, it will result in a narrower airway and easily to close when the muscles relax.
→ Anatomic abnormalities (such as enlarged tongue or receding chin have higher chance of obstructing the airway)
→ Family history of OSA – Even though no proven for inherit pattern
→ Lack of awareness on Children - Sleep Apnea can strike anyone at any age, however it is always neglect for the children age group
